How to Start a Program
School-Based Agricultural Education (SBAE) is offered in 91 of Indiana's 92 counties in more than 240 middle and high schools. As of fall 2024, there were approximately 370 Agriculture teachers. Student enrollment exceeds 25,000 in grades 5-12.
Schools wanting to start a SBAE program should follow this process using the resources below.
- Determine community, student, and administration interest and support.
- Contact your local CTE Director to assist with remaining steps. Find your Director at https://iacted.org/directors/
- Establish initial local SBAE advisory committee.
- Contact appropriate state-level entities such as Office of CTE for program and funding information, Purdue University SBAE teacher education for Agriculture teacher supply information, and Indiana FFA Association Executive Director for chartering an FFA chapter.
- Determine program focus, curricular pathway(s), and courses.
- Secure facilities, equipment, supplies, and other materials necessary to appropriately teach the chosen pathway(s) and courses.
- Hire a licensed Agriculture teacher.
- Enroll students.
- The Agriculture teacher works with Indiana FFA Association to charter a local FFA chapter.
Once the SBAE program is established, a licensed Agriculture teacher is in place, and students are enrolled, the next step is to charter the FFA chapter. FFA plays an integral role in the Agricultural Education program within a school. Below are documents to assist schools and agriculture instructors in chartering a new FFA Chapter.
