4-H/FFA Career Development Events (CDE)


 
     
About      
The FFA/4H Career Development Events are outstanding programs that develop members' production agriculture technical skills, and in the process promote critical thinking and leadership development. These events encompass eleven specific CDE's as listed below.

Crops      
To create interest and promote understanding in agronomy by evaluating various areas including, crops, weeds, seeds, insects, disease and deficiencies and grain evaluation through the agriculture education curriculum.

Dairy      
To provide a competitive event for agricultural education students, emphasizing skills in dairy cattle evaluation, selection and dairy herd management.

Entomology      
The purpose of the Entomology CDE is to increase youth understanding of insects, control measures, and integrated pest management.

Forestry      
To stimulate student interest and to promote forestry instruction in the agricultural education curriculum and to provide recognition for those who have demonstrated skills and competencies as a result of forestry instruction.

Horse and Pony      
The purpose of the Horse Evaluation Career Development Event is to stimulate the study of and interest in equine science selection, management and production through the agricultural education curriculum.

Horticulture      
The purpose of the Horticulture CDE is to allow members to demonstrate mastery skills in the identification, production, marketing and buying of flower, fruit, vegetable and ornamental crops.

Livestock      
To provide a competitive event for agricultural education students, emphasizing skills in the livestock industry including; evaluation, selection of desirable traits, communication and decision making skills, and management.

Livestock Skill-a-thon      
To provide activities that include identification and evaluation of various livestock production related topics in individual and team divisions.

Meats      
The purpose of the Meats CDE is to allow members to demonstrate mastery skills in the areas of identification and evaluation, allowing for students to be more knowledgeable consumers of meat and meat products.

Milk Quality and Products      
To enhance learning activities related to milk quality, federal milk marketing attributes of milk products and substitutes for them. The focus of this Career Development Event is on achievement of high quality raw milk, federal milk marketing orders and attributes of selected products of milk.

Poultry and Eggs      
Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event stimulates learning activities relative to production and management, processing, marketing and consumption of poultry products.

Soils      
The purpose of the Soils Evaluation Career Development Event is to demonstrate understanding and mastery in determining soil physical properties and corresponding best use management practices for farmland use and/or home site development.

Wildlife Habitat      
Environmental and natural resource education has a responsibility to ensure an educated public and provide students prepared to enter careers in the environmental and natural resource industry. The purpose of the environmental and natural resource career development event is to stimulate student interest and to promote environmental and natural resource instruction in the agricultural education curriculum.
